It's an amazing place, I was there for a couple of days in 2002, just driving through. I'd like to spend several days just going around the valley. I'll post some more pics from there in a month or so.
And if you get the chance, go.

What a cool weeks vacation, and you could photograph the entire trip!

I almost never set out to photograph a landscape, nor do I think of my camera as a means of recording a mountain or an animal unless I absolutely need a 'record shot'. My first thought is always of light. -Galen Rowell
I've tweaked the levels and contrast in photoshop because this is a scanned image and scanning usually produces a flattish image, but the sun there isn't really very subtle. This was shot sometime between 7 and 8 in the morning and by 10 the shadows were gone the sand was to hot walk across while wearing sandals.
Shallow DOF works well too. Check out this guy [link] All his work is done in camera. It's amazing.

I've read that the spring there is amazing. It does rain there a little in the spring and then the wild flowers come up [link] [link] [link]
The whole experience of visiting a desert was wonderful for me. I had wanted to see one for some time and it was just magical

Thanks for the comment
It's a scanned image, and the print is a little grainy.
